Pretty good NatGeo article on Nitrogen, over-fertilisation and runaway agricultural output: 'The Curse of Fertilizer' touching on many of the above points and filling out some detail (h/t Vanessa). I thought this was particularly well put:

almost half of the nitrogen found in our bodies’ muscle and organ tissue started out in a fertilizer factory

Although the author made the usual howler of putting the cart of human population before the horse of agricultural surplus:

As [China's] population grew by an astounding 300 million people between 1970 and 1990, China’s traditional agriculture struggled to keep up.

Well, okay, maybe the old peasant traditions didn't play so much of a role in it but those additional 300 million people came into the world as a direct result of the higher yields made possible by nitrogen fertilisers and the new plant varieties that were bred specifically to take advantage of them. If anything it was the human population which 'struggled to keep up' with the massive expansion of food availability and an artificially increased carrying capacity of the land. More food = more people.

'2.13 What is the ``omnidirectional halo?''

[This relates to Fuller's epistemography. From Synergetics [501.10-501.12]]

``Any conceptual thought is a system and is structured tetrahedrally. This is because all conceptuality is polyhedral. The sums of all the angles around all the vertexes - even crocodile, or a 10,000-frequency geodesic (which is what the Earth really is) - will always be 720 degrees less than the number of vertexes time 360 degrees.

``The difference between nonconceptual, nonsimultaneous Universe and thinkability is always two tetrahedra: one as macro, to complete the convex localness outside the system, and one as micro, to complete the concave localness inside the system, to add up to finite but nonconceptual Universe. Thus the thinkable system takeout from Universe has a 'left-out' outside irrelevancy tetrahedron and a 'left-in' inside irrelevancy tetrahedron.

``You have to have the starkly nonvisible to provide the complementary tetrahedron to account for the visibility, since concave and convex are not the same. That stark invisible reality of the nonconceptual macro- and micro-tetrahedra also have to have this 720-degree elegance. But the invisible outside tetrahedron was equally stark. The finite but nonconceptual inness and outness: that is the Omnidirectional Halo.'' '

I hope that makes things clear. ;)

I tried a few times to post this comment on the Dark Mountain repost of this post without any luck

http://dark-mountain.net/uncategorized/lessons-from-burdock/

so I post here instead

Over the period of seasonal celebration I was reading through a load of tabs I have had open on my browser for some time. One was this post, which I loved, along with the following discussion. One of the next tabs I read was this page - I found it while doing research on seed sharing (the author organised a permaculture seed share for some years).
Apparently written 20 years ago. Ties in nicely with the discussion at the Dark Mountain reproduction of this post :-)
